How to become a licensed plumber in New Mexico

- Build the required experience. MM-1 Qualifying Party (QP): 4 years (8,000 hours) within the 10 years immediately preceding application. JP Journeyman Plumber: 2 years (4,000 hours). Accredited technical training may substitute for up to 50% of the experience requirement at one-half year per year of training.
- Pass the MM-1 Plumbing Contractor Trade Exam and New Mexico Contractor Business and Law Exam and JP Journeyman Plumber Written Exam and JP Journeyman Plumber Practical Exam exams. Providers, passing scores and fees are in the Exams section below.
- Secure your surety bond. New Mexico requires $10,000 contractor license bond, underwritten by a corporate surety authorized to transact business in New Mexico; must remain in force for entire license period; 30-day cancellation notice to CID required.

- MM-2 Natural Gas Fitting Contractor — Install, alter, repair, service and maintain natural gas piping and fittings including boiler systems and warm-air heating. Cannot install LP Gas systems.
- MM-98 Mechanical Contractor — Encompasses all work under MM-1 through MM-4 and all specialty mechanical classifications — plumbing, natural gas, HVAC, and process piping.
- JP Journeyman Plumber Certificate — Journeyman-level plumbing work under an MM-1 or MM-98 licensed contractor.
- JPG Journeyman Plumber and Natural Gas Fitter Certificate — Journeyman-level plumbing and natural gas fitting work under an MM-1, MM-2, or MM-98 licensed contractor.
